Take the LEAP with Family Practice Associates of Lexington

Matthew Herron with Angelic Form

The Lexington Extraordinary Art Project (LEAP) is a plan envisioned by physician/artist David P. Dubocq with the help of the head of the Sculpture Department at the University of Kentucky, Professor Garry R. Bibbs.  The goal of LEAP is to enrich the Lexington community with privately-funded, publicly-displayed artwork.

LEAP began with a sculpture contest sponsored by Family Practice Associates of Lexington (FPA), located at 1775 Alysheba Way in the Hamburg Office Park.  Fourteen upper level sculpture students, under the guidance of Professor Bibbs, competed for first, second, and third place prizes.  Angelic Form by Matthew Herron was chosen as the first place winner. The first place winner receives a commission for a large scale sculpture which will be installed for public enjoyment on the grounds of FPA’s medical office building.

However, this is just the beginning.  Dr. Dubocq and Professor Bibbs have developed a business model for repeating this process for the benefit of all involved, and the Lexington community as a whole.  The businesses participating in this project will receive outstanding works of art, marketing promotions through the sculpture competition and installation, and will be able to support the University of Kentucky at an extremely reasonable cost.  The artists will receive recognition for their work, funding to complete their art pieces, and hands-on experience in the art commission process.  The University will be recognized for high quality education and public service, as well as, benefit from attracting more students to UK’s cutting-edge art program.  The Lexington Community will gain multiple outdoor sculptures, on the order of the Horse Mania exhibition, with the distinction that these sculptures will be on display for years to come for the enjoyment of residents and tourists.  There are positive results for everyone.

The competition took place place on Saturday, February 25th at Family Practice Associates of Lexington office.  Fourteen scale models were presented for judgment.   Those not selected are available for commission by other interested individuals or groups.  Call (859) 977-2123 or email smiller@fpalex.com for more information.
